چکیده

In experience-based (or case-based) reasoning, new problems are solved by retrieving and adapting the solutions to similar problems encountered in the past. An important issue in experience-based reasoning is to identify diierent types of knowledge and reasoning useful for diierent classes of case-adaptation tasks. In this paper, we examine a class of non-routine case-adaptation tasks that involve patterned insertions of new elements in old solutions. We describe a model-based method for solving this task in the context of the design of physical devices. The method uses knowledge of generic teleological mechanisms (GTMs) such as cascading. Old designs are adapted to meet new functional speciications by accessing and instantiating the appropriate GTM. The Kritik2 system evaluates the computational feasibility and suuciency of this method for design adaptation.

Multimodal Analogies in Modelling and Design

Drawings, on the one hand, and teleological models, on the other, are two ways of understanding and communicating design information. Drawing on previous work, Structure-Behavior-Function (SBF) theory claims that teleological knowledge is comprised of three basic kinds of knowledge: structural knowledge, behavioral knowledge, and functional knowledge. However, the design task, in practice, revo...

A Functional Theory of Design Patterns

Design patterns specify generic relations among abstract design elements. In the domain of physical devices, design patterns, called generic teleological mechanisms (or GTMs), specify generic functional relations and abstract causal structure of a class of devices. We describe a functional theory of acquisition, access, and use of GTMs, but focus on their use in analogical design. In this theor...

Use of design patterns in analogy-based design

Design patterns specify generic relations among abstract design elements. We hypothesize that design patterns are productive units of analogical transfer in design. We describe a normative theory of analogy-based design called model-based analogy (or MBA) that transfers design patterns from source cases to target problems. In particular, for the domain of physical devices, we identify a class o...

Development of a Generic Risk Matrix to Manage Project Risks

A generic risk matrix is presented for use identifying and assessing project risks quickly and cost effectively. It assists project managers with few resources to perform project risk analysis. The generic risk matrix (GRM) contains a broad set of risks that are categorized and ranked according to their potential impact and probability of occurrence. The matrix assists PMs in quickly identifyin...
